Bloxorz
Bloxorz is one of the most mathematically elegant puzzle games ever made. You control a rectangular block that must roll across a tile grid and fall through a hole at the end — but the block must be positioned upright (standing on its smallest face) to fit through the hole. Laying the block on its side makes it too wide. Every roll changes your orientation.
The puzzle design is deceptively simple to understand and genuinely challenging to solve. You must plan multiple moves ahead, accounting for the block's current orientation with each roll. Special tiles — switches, bridges, soft tiles that can only hold the block upright — add layers of complexity across 33 increasingly devious levels.
Bloxorz is a puzzle classic that has introduced millions of players to spatial reasoning challenges in a browser. It pairs well with Fireboy and Watergirl and Plants Vs Zombies in our puzzle collection. For a change of pace that tests reflexes instead of planning, try Geometry Rash!
How to Play Bloxorz
Roll the Block
Arrow keys roll the block in each direction. Each roll changes the block's orientation relative to the grid — keep track of whether it's lying flat or standing upright.
Reach the Hole Upright
The exit hole only accepts the block when it's standing vertically (on its 1x1 face). Arriving on the 1x2 or 2x1 face falls off the edge.
Use Switches Carefully
Orange switches activate when touched, creating or removing bridges. Plan switch activation into your solution — some require the block to be upright or lying flat when triggered.
Controls
- Arrow keys to roll the block. Don't let it fall off the stage or roll the wrong way into the hole.
Tips for Success
Count your orientation. Track whether the block is standing, lying East-West, or lying North-South before every move. This prevents orientation confusion.
Work backward from the hole. Figure out what orientation you need at the finish, then work backward to find the sequence that gets you there.
Soft tiles collapse under flat blocks. Orange/soft tiles can only support the block when standing. Plan routes that keep the block upright on these sections.
Take notes on paper. For harder levels, sketching the grid layout and planned move sequence helps organize complex solutions.
Use the level code system. Bloxorz gives codes for completed levels — note them down so you can return without replaying from the start.
